When we return for a visit to our families in
Switzerland, they think of us as coming home.

The landscape and the language are familiar; the yodel
music playing on the radio makes me hum along. It feels warm to be
surrounded by family, but some things just don’t fit any more.
We have forgotten about the restaurants filled with
cigarette smoke. As much as we love white asparagus, bratwurst, roesti
and Linzer Torte, it is difficult to eat such a large meal for lunch. The coffee is so strong, it makes me tremble.
The train system in Switzerland is like its country’s
famous watches: reliable and punctual. If a person arrives one minute
late, the train has left. Here, in the Cariboo region we live on "Cariboo
time", people are perpetually fifteen minutes late. Needless to say....
